Overview

I used to be just like Trev. I was 20 before I tasted curry, ate pizza or learnt the recipe for chips.

The difference between us is that I'm all for moving on, all for looking to the future. Trev meanwhile, like a bulldog holding onto a bone prefers to exist in a present that was then. While I don't claim to be AA Gill my knowledge of all things culinary has moved on a bit since my youth. Similarly with music, I've enjoyed moving with the times since the day "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" landed on my turntable back in 1975. Over the years I've introduced Trev to many a culinary effort from my kitchen and countless seminal musical acts. Only on a few occasions has this had the desired effect (pizza, kidney beans (on toast in his case) Joy Division, The Stone Roses, Interpol), but overall I've found the process to be largely fruitless.

So one drunken evening on a recent trip to Catalunya I decided to give Trev a quest to see where living in MY world takes him. I'm not for a moment suggesting that my lifestyle is in any way better than his, far from it. I think it's all to do with where our lives have taken us; living in London caused me to change my outlook and way of life to fit in with people. Trev hasn't had to make those compromises. The idea behind the quest is one of experiment, to see where he ends up after a year, working from a point-of-reference that I'm going to give him.

Trev's Response

I hate Paddy because he's always right. I've hated him since the summer of 1979 - since the dawn of the Frisky Pigs. He was right then too. My problem was I never really took any notice - preferring to follow my own musical instincts.

24 years later when I did a demo version of TRAP for our forthcoming EP, Don't Squeeze My Buboes. I was fairly pleased with what I'd done. Paddy heard it and was not impressed. He systematically pulled it apart. I listened to his criticisms and promptly recorded another version which he liked. I listened to my first demo again. Guess what? The bastard was right!

It's the same with other stuff too - food, wine, entertainment, just about everything. Trev's Quest is his final attempt to get me out of my habitual ways and into a more fulfilling cultural existence.

Is it possible? We shall see.
